Inside the crater, you may find the different color and size of stones. Therefore, the Ijen Crater is also known as the beautiful garden of stone. Another attraction is to observe how the sulfur miners do their work. You will see men will carry individual loads of up to 70 kg, often barefooted. They will go up to the rim of the crater and then 17 km down the mountainside to a factory near Banyuwangi. The porters are paid by weight.
Travelers Type for Ijen TrekkingI would recommend Ijen Trekking Experience for travelers who love nature and are not afraid of nature's unpredictable weather. The unpredictable weather makes me cannot guarantee that you will be able to go down to the crater on the day of your trip in spite of the schedule. Due to massive sulfur clouds, it would be too dangerous for you to go down to the crater. That is why; this experience would only meet those who have interest and passion for adventure and exploring unique experiences.Ijen Trekking is basically achievable by those who have a good level of fitness. You do not need to have certain experiences in climbing, though.
Things to be aware of during Ijen Trekking
- You need to be careful as you may be climbing in the dark on the rough track. The track is not clearly marked or secured in the dark. I strongly recommend you to bring a headlamp as I will not provide it;
- You may see deep slopes without fences;
- Despite the assistance of a professional local guide, you may find no rescue service provided in the area;
- No public toilet anywhere once you have left the base camp (the starting point).
What will you do during the trekkingOur driver will pick you up from the meeting point, which is at your hotel or Karang Asem Train Station in Banyuwangi. From the meeting point, we will drive you for about an hour by 4 WD car to Paltuding rest area or (base camp) for about 1-1.5 hours trip. During the trip, you will enjoy beautiful landscape in the middle of rice fields, a small village, and a tropical rain-forest. Since we will depart very early in the morning, you may find those scenery on the way back during the daytime.
The TrekkingWe will start off from the base camp for the 4 km trek up the caldera rim. Depending on your fitness level, we may spend about 1-1.5 hours for trekking to reach the crater. We will begin the trek through quite an east straight and wide route with no rocks following gentle slope and slightly uphill to reach the top point. Along the path, you will enjoy the surrounding volcanoes and luxurious vegetation.Once we have reached the crater rim, I will give the gas mask to you. Then, I will bring you down into the caldera. Despite the availability of some wood handrails, they are not marked. Therefore, please be careful of the rough track, especially in the dark. No need to walk fast, just follow the person (or the guide) in front of you. If you can cope with the sulfur, you will be able to enjoy the blue fire right on the edge of the acidic lake.After enjoying the Blue Fire, we will trek to Ijen summit (top of Mount Ijen) to enjoy the sunset over the entire area and to observe the sulfur miners do their work.After you enjoyed the natural scenery at Crater of Ijen, we will go down to reach the base camp. We will take you back to Hotel in Banyuawangi or other droppings-off points as long as they are in Banyuwangi.
