The Jakarta Sunda Kelapa Tour

Our Jakarta Sunda Kelapa Tour is a unique trip. Why? Because it combines culinary and historical tour into one package. This is four hours tour by walking. Travelers have an opportunity to explore historical as well as culinary heritage. Particularly, the Sunda Kelapa Tour aims to explore a coastal side of Jakarta. The area is known as Sunda Kelapa Port area. You could join the trip from Monday to Friday only. Minimum participants are two guests. For Regular Weekend Tour (Saturday and Sunday) we offer the open tour with special price. Please check tour package for the regular weekend.

So, check more details on what you shall explore during the journey.

The Port

Firstly, we start our Jakarta Sunda Kelapa Tour by visiting the Port. Currently, Sunda Port is used as a fish market. Located at the mouth of Ciliwung River, activities start very early in the morning. Usually it starts from 3 AM when fishermen go sailing to catch fishes. Then, they come back around 6 AM to the shore. After that, fish auction is opened. Here, people do sell and buy activities for trading fishes, lobsters, shrimps and dehydrated turtles.

Historically, in the 15th century, this old harbor is the heart of trade for the old Pajajaran Kingdom. During the 16th century,  Portuguese and Dutch invented Jakarta. Then, they developed the area as the harbor town of Sunda Kelapa. Today, Sunda Kelapa Port is still one of the most hubs to the outside worlds. Here, you could see the magnificent Pinisi (Bugis Schooner). Pinisi is a wooden ship made by Indonesian sailors. On the other hand, other heritage such as the remnants of Kasteel Batavia and trading post of VOC still exist until today.

During the Sunda Kelapa Tour, travelers also have opportunities to visit among others Syahbandar Tower and Marine Museum. Syahbandar Tower of its Dutch Name Uitkijk Post was established in 1839. The Tower functioned to monitor boat traffic which comes in and out of Batavia Town. Therefore, Sunda Kelapa Port is a right place to enjoy the waterside scenery.

Culinary Heritage

VOC Dockyard Cafe (Werfstraat)

Secondly, travelers have an opportunity to explore culinary near the Sunda Kelapa Port. Let us start from the VOC Dockyard Cafe. It is a heritage from the Year 1628.  Once you enter its door, you shall feel you were in the Colonial Era. The best part of this cafe is the courtyard. At the yard, there is a stretch of green grass with a bamboo fence surrounding the courtyard. Moreover, the Joglo House a name for Javanese Traditional House and palm trees add beauty to it. Here is the great place to enjoy a quiet lunch. Moreover, the price is affordable with delicious foods. Try its gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sausage) + sop buntut (oxtail soup).

Batavia Marina Cafe

It has a fancy colonial architecture building with old and classic decorations. And the beautiful background of the harbor and seashore. Besides Indonesian cuisines, it also serves Asian as well as Western Foods. Try to sit at Marcopolo Dining Room, an outdoor room with seaside garden. Here, you could sea yachts and Quicksilver Cruise while enjoying your foods. And, the cafe also sells chocolate ice cream. So, don’t miss to try it.

Raja Kuring Restaurant

Lastly, the group visits Raja Kuring Restaurant. It operates in a building established in 1635. During the era, it functioned as a wood shop. Its original name was Scheepwerven. The design is dominated by the Colonial and Chinese architectures. You could taste the Indonesian authentic foods in this restaurant.
