Quoted from cites.org, CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. The purpose is to make sure that the survival of wild animals and plants does not threaten by international trade in specimens. You have to ask for permission to the Indonesian CITES if you find out that your pet is on the list. And also your pet will be not permissible to enter Indonesia if is on pregnant or nursing.’

The next thing you should prepare if you want to travel with pets is your pets secure papers.

Rabies Vaccination Papers

If your pet is a mammal, Rabies Vaccination Papers is the proof that your pets have been vaccinated against rabies virus. The prevailing vaccinations are more than 30 days before entering Indonesia and should not be more than 12 months. You also need to vaccinate your kittens and puppies. Normally, you can vaccinate your kittens and puppies when three months old. The important note is you cannot enter the rabies-free areas in Indonesia if you came from the non-rabies-free country. Sumatra, Maluku, West Papua, West Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Madura Island, Central Java, East Java, and Yogyakarta are rabies-free areas in Indonesia.

Blood Titer Test

Before you travel with pets to Indonesia, your pet should have a blood titer test 30 days before the rabies vaccination. The purpose is to make sure that your pet antibodies are enough so later the vaccine can have maximum effect. Remember, this blood titer test just for you who came from non-rabies-free countries.

Testing For H3N2 Virus

If you came from US or Canada, your pet needs to be tested for the H3N2 virus. If your pet proves infected by the virus, your pet needs to be quarantined for 14 days.

Health Certificate

Birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, tropical fish and some mammals (like rodents) don’t need the rabies vaccination papers.  But you will have to bring the health certificate from a licensed veterinarian from your country.

Indonesian Government Import License

Another important secure paper to bring with you if traveling with a pet is the import license from the Indonesian Government. This import license is given by the Director of Animal Health of Indonesia. Your province destination in Indonesia will give you the recommendation to get that import license. After your application, you will need 30 days to get that license.

After all your documents are ready, the next thing you should pay attention to is about pet regulations on the airlines. This is because not all airlines have the same regulation about bringing the pet on board. If you want to travel with pets, you have to choose between two options such as baggage or cargo. You can carry your pet as excess baggage if the airlines give permission to bring your pet on board. This will make it easy for you to check your pet every time. But, if you want to transport your pet through cargo unaccompanied, you need to arrange it eight hours before the departure time. This cargo will cost you cheaper than if you carry your pet as an excess baggage. Another recommendation is you can install a microchip in your pet. That microchip will help you a lot if you lost your pet because it contains the record of your information. Aside install microchip, you can also give tags to your pet that contain your contact information.
